Best Practices in Preparation for Psychedelic Assisted Therapy
Psychedelic Assisted Therapy is growing in evidence:
Increasingly more individuals are considering including legal, regulate psychedelic treatment into their overall healing and wellness plan. A growing body of well-designed research is demonstrating remarkable results and durability of changes to long-standing symptoms profiles, difficult to address habits, and rigid thinking patterns. Some individuals are noticing a reduction in depressive symptoms and anxiety for months to years following their treatment.
Psychedelic Assisted Therapy is, however, not a quick fix. It can be a catalyst for making meaningful change after other traditional treatments become ineffective. It can also represent a potent tool in exploring personal growth and existential distress.
Steps to Consider:
Thorough screening and dedicated preparation practices are essential precursors to meaningful and extended integration. When considering preparation, please consider multiple facets of your life for months or at minimum 2 weeks prior to your scheduled dosing session. Consider your Physical, Social, Spiritual and Emotional/Cognitive domains when preparing. Additionally, you want to develop an open-ended, flexible intention for your treatment. Some intentions to consider: “Be curious to learn what my inner healer and the psychedelic have to show me” or “pause to reflect on ways I want to heal and to move forward in my life”.
Examples of steps for Preparation:
1. Eat cleanly and balanced for at least 1-2 weeks.
2. Reduce any mind altering substances for at least a week or more. These include: alcohol, caffeine, cannabis, etc.
3. Be open to and nonjudgemental about memories, ideas, thoughts, & questions that might rise to your awareness in the months and weeks prior to your journey. Write them down.
4. Find a place in your outdoor environment to use as a “Sit Spot”. Take time to be contemplative, meditative or just notice while you are in that spot for a week prior to your journey. Then reconnect with that spot in the days, weeks following.
5. Interview and select an experienced, trusted guide or natural medicine facilitator who may also be a licensed mental health therapist.
